Mayor Van Tighem

Mayor Gordon van Tighem

His Worship Mayor Gordon Van Tighem was born in Calgary, Alberta, a graduate of the University of Manitoba and a lifelong learner. He moved to Yellowknife from Edmonton in 1992 with his wife Carol and their 3 children. His election to Mayor of the City of Yellowknife was in October 2000 and he was acclaimed  in 2003, again in 2006 and re-elected in 2009. Prior to his election as Mayor, Gord served as Executive Director of the NWT Community Mobilization Partnership for one year after 3 years as Chairman of their Volunteer Board. He chose early retirement from the Bank of Montreal in 1999 having served for 24 years in marketing management, the last eight years as NWT Territorial Manager. He has broad experience with a variety of organizations such as the Yellowknife and the NWT Chamber of Commerce and as a Founding Director of the Stanton Hospital Foundation and the SideDoor Youth Centre.

Current appointments include: Chair of the Northern and Remote Forum and member of the Executive Committee of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, President of the NWT Association of Communities, Director of the Northwest Corridor Development Corporation, Director of the Canadian Wildlife Federation, and the Fly Kid Foundation.

Mayor Van Tighem was involved in many volunteer organizations including: Edmonton Ringette, Edmonton Federation of Community Leagues, Scouts Canada, Junior Forest Wardens, Parish Council, Arctic Winter Games, Sport North, NWT Federation of Shooting Sports, NWT Wildlife Federation, Ducks Unlimited and the Model Aeronautics Association of Canada.

Outside of serving the City, his main interest now include family, boating and fishing the many lakes surrounding Yellowknife and camping and hunting in the Mackenzie Mountains.

Councillor Lydia Bardak

Lydia Bardak

Lydia came to Yellowknife in 1989 and has been a downtown homeowner since 1995. Her 25 year career in rehabilitation and advocacy began at the Canadian National Institute for the Blind in Edmonton after she completed an undergraduate degree in psychology. Always working in the non-government not-for-profit sector, other past employment includes being a manager at the NWT Council of Persons with Disabilities, a director for the Governance Board of the Workers' Compensation Board of the NWT and Nunavut, and a contractor to the Rick Hansen Foundation. Currently, Lydia coordinates the Yellowknife Community Justice Committee at the John Howard Society. Volunteer activities include being a director in the Yellowknife Rotary Club, the Co-Chair of the Yellowknife Homelessness Coalition, a coordinator for the Yellowknife Youth Coalition and a member of Citizens On Patrol Service (COPS).

Bob Brooks

Bob arrived in Yellowknife in 1980, met his wife to be in 1981 and went on to marry Lynn in 1985. Together they raised two daughters and are now the very proud grandparents of four grandchildren. Bob and Lynn are also very proud to have helped raise 18 foster children through the Foster Parent Program, and are currently blessed with nine foster grandchildren. Bob works with the GNWT Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment as a Senior Policy Analyst, and prior to that was the Executive Director of the NWT Chamber of Commerce. In 1999, Bob was honoured to be the recipient of the "Executive of the Year" award, as awarded by the Chamber of Commerce Executives of Canada. Bob is now in his sixth term of office - first elected in 1991. A very active long-term resident and a member in many local community groups, including current membership in the Rotary Club of Yellowknife, the Elks Club, and the Royal Canadian Legion. Bob has served on many Boards and Committees, including; past Vice President of the NWT Association of Communities as well as past Chair of the Northern Communities Caucus of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities.

Mark Heyck

Mark was born and raised in Yellowknife and grew up in the Con Mine area of the City. He attended McGill University in Montreal and studied History and Canadian Studies. Mark currently works at the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre, as an Online Exhibit Coordinator. Since returning to Yellowknife from university, Mark has volunteered as Treasurer and Vice-President for Folk on the Rocks, as well as being elected to the position of Regional Vice-President for Somba Ke on the Union of Northern Workers executive. He has also served as President of the Western Arctic NDP Riding Association since 2000.

Paul Falvo

Paul Falvo graduated from Royal Roads Military College and Dalhousie Law School before coming North to work as a criminal prosecutor. Paul now practises criminal defence and environmental law. An active volunteer at many community events, Paul is a member of the Rotary Club, Alternatives North, and the Yellowknife Chamber of Commerce. First elected to Council in 2006, Paul works with local businesses to organize downtown litter clean-ups in the summer months. Paul is married to Christa Domchek. They live downtown with their daughter.

Councillor Amanda Mallon

Amanda Mallon

Amanda Mallon has been a resident of Yellowknife since 1973. In 1978, Amanda received her B. Ed from the University of Saskatchewan and began her teaching career in Yellowknife. In 1999/2000 she earned her M.Ed in Educational Administration from the University of Alberta. From 2001 to 2004, Amanda worked as the Teacher Induction and Mentorship Coordinator at the Department of Education, Culture and Employment. From August 2004 until June 2008, Amanda served the teachers of the NWT as the President of the Northwest Territories Teachers’ Association and served as Vice President of the Canadian Teachers’ Federation from 2007/08. Volunteer activities include being on the Executive of the NWT Literacy Council, a member of the YWCA National Advocacy Committee and a Director of YWCA, Yellowknife. She currently works as an education consultant in Yellowknife.

 Councillor Shelagh Montgomery

Shelagh Montgomery

Shelagh grew up in a small village northwest of Montréal (Québec). She attended university in Montréal where she obtained an undergraduate degree in Geology and a Masters and PhD in Environmental Sciences. In 2000, she moved to Déline, on Great Bear Lake, to work as a science advisor for the community on issues related to the abandoned Port Radium mine. Two years later, Shelagh re-located to Yellowknife to work for the Canadian Arctic Resources Committee, a non-governmental organization promoting sustainability in the North. Since settling in Yellowknife, she has been active in the community; sitting for two terms as a board member of Ecology North, as an active member of the social justice coalition Alternatives North, supporting several community NGOs, and elected for her second term on City Council. Shelagh works as a Senior Environmental Scientist and Office Manager for an environmental consulting firm.

 Cory Vanthuyne

Cory is a lifelong northerner, born in Inuvik and raised in Yellowknife. After graduating from Sir John Franklin in 1989, Cory sought vocation in the construction industry apprenticing in two building trades; carpentry and cabinetmaking. In 1996 Cory received an Associate’s Degree in Management and went on to pursue a successful career in the golf industry for the next 7 years. In the fall of 2003 Cory integrated his construction skills with his management experience and transformed his career into project management. Since 2007 Cory has worked as Manager of Technical for the NWT Housing Corporation, North Slave District Office. After losing his mother Gail to lung cancer in 2003 Cory has been an advocate for a number of cancer charities including the Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay for Life and the Terry Fox Run. In 2009 Cory founded and organized Golf Fore Life, a cancer charity fundraiser in support of the Canadian Cancer Society. Cory has previously resided on the Board of Directors for both the Yellowknife Curling and Golf Clubs. He currently resides on the Board of Directors for Habitat for Humanity, Western Arctic Conservative Association and Skills Canada NWT.

David Wind was born in Holland and grew up in Calgary, Alberta.  He studied Electrical Engineering at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon where he earned his Master of Science degree.  David served with the Canadian Armed Forces for 22 years, retiring with the rank of Major.  He moved to Yellowknife with his wife and family in 1981.  David was the Chief, Systems and Computer Services for the GNWT before taking on a third career as an owner/operator of a prominent local business.  Concerns and issues faced by his friends and neighbours have been a keen interest for David.  He has had a lead role in the Ingraham Trail Landholders Association and has served as a trustee on the Stanton Territorial Hospital Board and the Stanton Territorial Hospital Foundation.  David has also served as the Chair of the Yellowknife Smart Communities Society.  He has brought the concerns of City residents before Council on a number of important issues.
