City Receives Funding from GNWT for Community Energy Projects
CITY RECEIVES FUNDING FROM GNWT ENERGY CONSERVATION PROGRAM FOR 3 ENERGY EFFICIENT PROJECTS
December, 2006
The City of Yellowknife is pleased to announce that it has received $25,000 from the GNWT Energy Conservation Program to support 3 projects at City facilities that will greatly reduce energy costs. The projects include:
1. Insulated Piping Project - City Garage:
This project will insulate heating pipes at the City Garage to minimize heat loss between the boiler and the intended heating area. The estimated annual energy savings is $4,146. The estimated greenhouse gas savings is 14.1 tonnes/year. The heat will be distributed more effectively, making a more comfortalbe working environment. It will allow the heat to be utilized where required, giving better control of the heating system, and it will reduce boiler run time and overall "wear and tear".
2. Lighting Retrofit - Public Works Facilities:
This project will retrofit 217 lights in 14 of the City's facilities to reduce power consumption. The estimated annual energy savings is $11,774.
3. Integrated Parking Lot Controller System (IPLC) - City Garage:
This project is for the installation of the IPLC system at the City Garage. The IPLC measures both temperature and wind-chill and is programmed not to deliver power above -5C. It varies power delivery from 10% at -5C to 100% at -25C. Once the IPLC device first detects a functioning block heater, it cuts power for the first 2 hours, recognizing how long it will take a hot engine to cool to a temperature requiring block heater support. The IPLC will be installed on the 60 vehicle stalls at the City Garage that are used for block heaters and battery blankets in both City fleet and employee vehicles. The estimated annual energy savings is $11,425.
