Yellowknife Smart Growth Redevelopment Plan
YELLOWKNIFE SMART GROWTH REDEVELOPMENT PLAN
December, 2006
The City of Yellowknife’s Planning and Development Department has recently submitted a Part A Application to the Federation of Canadian Municipalities' (FCM) Green Municipal Fund for the Yellowknife Smart Growth Redevelopment Plan. The application falls under the category of Sustainable Community Planning and will seek matching dollars to the $175,000 which City Council approved under the 2007 annual budget. In addition to the FCM grant application, the City of Yellowknife will be seeking further in-kind and/or financial support from local, Territorial and Federal organizations to leverage additional capacity for the Plan.
The Smart Growth Redevelopment Plan will address the need for a high level strategy and sustainably-integrated implementation framework to revitalize the Old Town Waterfront area, Downtown District and Old Airport Road Corridor. A primary focus of the redevelopment initiative is to promote the character and quality of life in Yellowknife’s commercial and heritage areas via streetscape amenities, architectural and site design, pedestrian accessibility and mixed-use neighbourhoods. In addition to preparing detailed urban design concepts throughout the redevelopment area, the Plan will develop various incentive programs, design guidelines and regulatory polices to promote economic revitalization and a “sense of place”. The redevelopment initiative will also build upon the goals and objectives of the Community Energy Plan by promoting the principles of smart growth and energy efficiency.
The terms of reference for the Smart Growth Redevelopment Plan will be completed in early 2007 with the public participation commencing shortly thereafter. The Planning and Development Department in conjunction with various partners will conduct an integrated consultation approach to ensure broad based community support and a holistic vision. This approach will include questionnaire surveys, focus group stakeholder meetings, a community design charrette and follow-up public forums. The Plan is targeted for completion in the fall of 2008.For more information, please contact the City of Yellowknife's Planning and Development Department at 920-5614.
