Smart Growth Implementation Committee
Council established the Yellowknife Smart Growth Implementation Committee and adopted its Terms of Reference on October 26, 2010. The purpose of the Committee is to serve the City in an advisory capacity regarding the implementation of the recommended actions outlined in the Smart Growth Development Plan Recommendations Report along with the former responsibilities of the Downtown Enhancement Committee (“DEC”).
The Smart Growth Development Plan is a 50-year planning vision that promotes sustained population growth and the development of the City within a smart growth framework. The vision statement adopted by the Plan Committee is:
“An ongoing and integrated growth and development process that balances a long-range perspective with daily actions and initiatives, to measurably improve the quality of life in Yellowknife and distinguish our unique northern community as a leader in urban sustainability.”
The Committee consists of thirteen (13) members appointed by City Council. The Committee members will play a leadership role in the implementation, promotion, and monitoring of the Recommendations Report based on the seven Smart Growth background reports and the Downtown Plan:
- Smart Growth City-wide Questionnaire Survey Results;
- Smart Growth Focus Group Facilitation Report;
- Yellowknife 50-Year Vision Metroquest Report;
- Urban Design Initiative;
- Yellowknife Downtown Façade Improvement Guidelines;
- Natural Area Preservation Strategy; and
- Transportation Improvement Plan.
