Adopt A Street Program
A co-operative program between the
City of Yellowknife Community Services Department
and the residents of Yellowknife.
Get Picky
The Community Services Department is striving to reach their goal of eradicating litter as a serious aesthetic and environmental concern for Yellowknife. To achieve this goal, the City of Yellowknife has introduced "Adopt A Street."
Benefits
Benefits of the Adopt A Street program are:
-
increased community involvement in litter control;
-
shared stewardship of our community;
-
pride in Yellowknife and our environment; and
-
giving back to our community for the benefit of all citizens and visitors.
Participants
Any citizen, group of citizens, public service group or office may adopt a street, block, park, site, trail, subdivision or neighbourhood, and be responsible for the general cleanliness of the area. View the Map to find out which streets have been adopted!
Support for Participants
Any groups participating in the Adopt A Street program will receive the following support from the Community Services Department:
-
a supply of heavy duty garbage bags as required
-
a supply of work gloves and pails for heavily littered areas or areas which may pose health risks
- upon notification, removal of bagged garbage which has been collected in your area in heavily littered areas
-
a sign erected in your adopted area which recognizes the efforts of participants
-
recognition in the Spring/Summer Recreation Guide
-
a signed certificate from the Mayor's office for joining
Participant Commitment
Partners in the Adopt A Street program must register with the City of Yellowknife Community Services Department, located downstairs at City Hall.
Partners must be committed to a minimum of one year participation in the program.
Partners are expected to clean their adopted area as required (suggested 5 to 7 times per year), with a strong emphasis on spring, summer and fall cleaning.
Partners must have fun and take pride in contributing to the effort of making our community litter free!
