Water Safety Week and Drowning Prevention Week

       


MAY 28 - JUNE 1, 2012 WATER SAFETY WEEK WARM-UP 
Ruth Inch Memorial Pool Volunteers with the support of Diavik Diamond Mines Inc. are offering elementary schools the chance to participate in an educational program during the week leading up to Water Safety Week 2012. The two key messages that we will be focusing on are supervising children around the water and wearing a lifejacket in situations where one is called for. These messages are in line with the findings in the most recent Drowning Report for the NWT. In 2008, 100% of Northerners who drowned were not wearing a lifejacket. Proper supervision was also a concern as 34% of drowning victims were alone when they drowned.

In the past 12 years RIMP volunteers have done kindergarten presentations that focused on water safety issues that affect young children and their families. The presentations have been well received in the schools and wehave had requests to broaden the scope of the program to include other children as well. The presentation will include the Water Watcher program and information on different types of floatation devices. Teachers interested in having  a presentation for their group should contact Johanna at 920-5680 or Renee at 920-5607 to arrange for their group to be included in this exciting program.

There will be special guests and visits from Buckles, the Personal Floatation Device along with FREE SWIMS sponsored by TIm Horton's throughout the week.
