Library cards and borrowing
Getting a Library Card |
Regular Membership |
Library cards are free and can be obtained by anyone who lives in Yellowknife. Your library card gives you access to any library in the NWT library system.
Those aged 18 and over and asked to present the following in order to obtain a library card: Photo ID (driver’s license, treaty card, passport…) AND A recent (within 60 days) utility bill or telephone bill with your current address
Those aged 14-17 are asked to present the following in order to obtain a library card: 1 piece of photo ID OR 2 pieces of non-photo ID AND A valid e-mail address

Juvenile Membership |
Children of all ages are encouraged to have their own cards, but parents must assume responsibility for materials borrowed by children. The parent or guardian of a child 13 years old or younger must sign a registration card. At least one parent or guardian must be a registered borrower.

Temporary and Shelter Residents |
Free temporary resident cards are available to those living in temporary housing or shelters providing you provide current contact information and a letter from your shelter or temporary housing. The card is valid for 3 months. If you are still in a temporary housing situation you can reactivate your card for another three months by providing updated contact information. This card restricts the number of items available to check out at one time to three.
Non-residents and temporary residents without a letter verifying current contact information may obtain a visitors card with a $25 refundable deposit. This card restricts the number of items available to check out at one time to three.

Using Your Card |
Your library card must be presented each time materials are borrowed. The card holder is the only person that can check out items on their card. You cannot check out material on a card that is not your own.

$0.25/day for a book borrowed from a NWT library $1.00/day for a book borrowed from non-NWT libraries | If you have fines that exceed $10 your borrowing privileges will be suspended until payment is made.

Fines and Fees for Lost and Damaged Books |
If you lose an item or return it damaged, you will be invoiced at the current replacement value for that item and charged an additional $5 processing fee. Your borrowing privileges are suspended until payment is made or the item is returned.

Claims Returned |
If you are recieving Overdue Notices for an item you believe you have returned, please contact the library and let us know that you believe you have returned it and on what day. We ask that you take another look around the house and we will search the library for it. If we find the item, it gets checked back in and any fines it accumulated are reversed.

Renewals |
Three reneweals are allowed on all materials, except when a hold is placed by another patron or if the material is an interlibrary loan.

Lost or Stolen Cards |
Report lost or stolen cards immediately. You are responsible for any materials borrowed on your card. A replacement card may be purchased for $1.00.
