Yellowknife Community Energy Plan
City of
In 2004, an energy baseline study was conducted to determine how much energy Yellowknife uses. Among a number of other things, this study found 95% of Yellowknife's electricity is generated through CO2 emission-free hydro. That said, largely because of the fossil fuels burned to provide heat, Yellowknife's CO2 emissions are almost twice the Canadian average. These and other results of the baseline study eventually lead to the creation of Yellowknife's Community Energy Plan. In implementing the plan, the City of Yellowknife has won numerous awards for its foucs on green energy and sustainability. To view the Community Energy Plan click here.
CEP News
In the fall of 2010, a final report on the Con Mine Energy Project is scheduled to be presented to Yellowknife City Council. This report will include a detailed estimate of potential revenue and costs associated with the project and other important information. The report will build on the encouraging but preliminary information provided by a feasibility study completed in late 2009. The project plans to use the energy from the naturally heated water inside the mine's roughly 6,000 foot deep Robertson Shaft to heat the largest buildings in the city's downtown core. Council is expected to decide whether to move forward with the Con Mine Energy Project sometime this fall.
