2026-2036 Climate Action Plan
The City of Yellowknife is currently working on its 2026-2036 Climate Action Plan, with a focus on climate change mitigation and adaptation. To ensure this plan is reflective of community knowledge and needs, we are engaging the public, businesses, stakeholders, First Nations governments, the Government of the Northwest Territories, local groups, and NGOs in the Plan development process.
What have we done so far?
Phase 1 engagement
From January to March 2025, the City engaged with residents, local organizations, businesses, utilities providers, the GNWT, the Yellowknives Dene First Nation, and City staff from other departments through a public roundtable, survey and additional meetings.

Background reports
The City retained Stantec Consulting Ltd. to complete an Energy and GHG Emissions Inventory as well as a Climate Vulnerability Assessment.
Governance and Priorities Committee meeting progress update presentation
City staff presented an update on progress on the Climate Action Plan at the GPC meeting on June 24. Watch the presentation online here.
Phase 2 engagement
The City engaged the public, stakeholders, and rightsholders on the draft actions for the Climate Action Plan through a public roundtable on June 25th, a PlaceSpeak survey, and additional meetings.

Presentation of updated draft Plan at Governance and Priorities Committee meeting
Based on input from the second phase of engagement, City staff updated the draft Plan and presented it at the GPC on November 10. To read the updated draft Plan, see page 9 of the meeting agenda. The presentation recording can be viewed here.
What's next?
Council is reviewing the draft Plan and will have further discussion on the Plan along with a supplementary work plan in the new year.
Past Plans and Policies
The Corporate and Community Energy Action Plan 2015-2025 (CCEAP) helped chart the course towards an energy smart Yellowknife that aimed to reduce the city's GHG emissions, its heating costs, dependence on fossil fuels and impact on global climate change.
In 2009, the City commissioned MetroQuest to create the City of Yellowknife’s 50-year Vision to guide growth and development.
The City first began energy planning through our 2006-2014 Community Energy Plan that set targets for the period of 2004 to 2014.
