Posted on Tuesday October 02, 2018

At 5:03 a.m. on Tuesday, October 2, 2018, the City of Yellowknife Fire Division was dispatched to 4904-54 Ave, Rockhill Apartments, for a report of smoke in the first floor hallway and a full group alert was initiated. The 33 suite apartment building, operated by the YWCA-NWT as transitional housing for families, was fully involved upon arrival.

An emergency shelter is being activated at the Fieldhouse for residents of Rockhill Apartments. All programs at the Fieldhouse are cancelled and the facility is closed to the public until further notice.

The Young Women’s Christian Association of Yellowknife NWT (YWCA) has indicated that cash donations to the YWCA Rockhill Fire Fund are being accepted and can be made through the following online site: https://www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/ywcanwt/.

The City of Yellowknife Fire Division remains on scene along with Municipal Enforcement, RCMP, Public Works and Airport Fire personnel. The public are asked to avoid the area of the fire as emergency personnel continue to work.

The cause of the fire is undetermined.  The Office of the Fire Marshal for the Northwest Territories has been contacted to initiate an investigation for this incident.

The City is working with representatives of the GNWT - Health & Social Services, Municipal & Community Affairs, Education, Culture & Employment, Housing Corporation and the Executive in order to provide assistance to affected families.
