TEMPORARY CHANGES TO GARBAGE COLLECTION

Posted on Friday April 03, 2020

The City of Yellowknife is taking difficult yet necessary action to ensure safe waste management operations are continued during the global, COVID-19 pandemic. Waste management is an essential service and, at this time, our top priorities are public and staff safety, and continued essential service delivery.

With more residents working and learning from home, there is unfortunately an increase in household waste. This has resulted in a need for additional residential waste pickup. The City will be taking the following temporary actions to help accommodate this increase in residential waste:

  • Weekly Black Cart waste collection will begin and Green Cart (organics) waste collection will be temporarily suspended, effective Monday, April 6, 2020. For the time being, residents should dispose of organic waste in Black Carts; *For the week beginning Monday, April 6, residents may place either their Green or Black Cart at the curbside for collection of general residential waste. Only one cart can be collected.
  • Dog waste can temporarily be disposed of in Black Carts;
  • The Solid Waste Facility will remain closed to the general public until further notice in an effort to keep the public and staff safe and reduce the spread of COVID-19;
  • In order to uphold social distancing, the City is working with Ingraham Trail residents to address their residential garbage needs;
  • Residents with honey bags or without access to regular garbage collection can contact the Solid Waste Facility to set up an appointment at swfinfo@yellowknife.ca or (867) 669-3406.

“Waste management is an important issue for Yellowknifers and residents have reached out with questions and concerns,” said Mayor Rebecca Alty. “Council and I want residents to know that we hear and understand your concerns and are working with Administration to provide the best possible solutions in this quickly evolving situation.”

“We continue to tackle complex waste management issues resulting from COVID-19 and all our decisions are made with public and staff safety, and continued essential service delivery as our top priorities,” said City Administrator, Sheila Bassi-Kellett. “Thanks to residents for doing your part in reducing waste wherever possible. We all have Amnesty Day to look forward to in May.”

By following simple yet effective waste management practices, residents can assist the City in tackling this issue:

  • Reduce waste wherever possible;
  • Divert waste by bringing recyclables to the Blue Recycling Depots;
  • Compress Black Cart waste, when it is safe to do so;
  • For now, store larger waste items, including spring cleaning, home renovation waste, etc.;
  • Do not illegally dump garbage.

To report anyone illegally dumping garbage, residents can call or email: 920-2737 or med@yellowknife.ca. Illegal dumping is financially and environmentally costly and increases strain on the City’s waste management resources.

The City looks forward to our annual Spring Amnesty Days and encourages residents to plan their waste management strategies around this. The date of this will be released in the coming weeks.

The City continues to evaluate the situation surrounding COVID-19 in Yellowknife and reminds residents that these measures are temporary. The City will inform the public of any changes. To stay up to date with the latest developments, visit www.yellowknife.ca.
