Water Licence Renewal

Under the NWT Waters Act, the City of Yellowknife requires a licence from the Mackenzie Valley Land and Water Board (MVLWB) to draw water from local water bodies and to deposit waste. The City’s current “Type A” Water Licence will expire in May 2022. The water licence does not regulate drinking water quality.

Prior to submitting its licence renewal application, the City would like to give residents and interested stakeholders the opportunity to understand what is being proposed and why, to ask questions, and to provide feedback if they wish. The City hopes to complete its pre-application engagement in October 2020 and to submit its application to the MVLWB in January 2021. Once submitted, the full application will be available for public review and feedback on the MVLWB Public Registry. Check back here throughout the application process to learn more about the City of Yellowknife’s Municipal Water Licence and to review documents related to the renewal.

The City held a virtual webinar for residents on Tuesday September 15th, 2020. Residents who were unable to attend the webinar can check out this recording or pdf of the presentation. The City's next opportunity for public engagement will be conducted online via PlaceSpeak at the end of September. Any additional input can be submitted via email to waterlicence@yellowknife.ca.

Updates on the application process will continue to be included in the Capital Update and on the City's social media platforms. For a brief introduction to the Water Licence Renewal Application process, check out this Factsheet!
