It’s back to school time and the City of Yellowknife (the City) would like to remind Yellowknifers to be vigilant and take extra caution in school zones and near school buses and students. Schools will begin to welcome students back starting August 25, 2022.

Remember these important Back to School Safety tips:

School Zones:

School zones remain in effect 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Municipal Enforcement officers will be actively monitoring traffic in these areas of the city to ensure the safety of students. Drivers should always take extra caution in these areas and obey posted speed limits. This is especially important in the coming weeks as children return to school.

School Buses:

When driving near a school bus, extra caution is needed. It is illegal to pass a school bus with its red flashing lights on. Drivers in both directions must stop. Be vigilant and alert behind the wheel.

Walking and Cycling to School:

Practice road safety with children and remind them to follow road safety rules: Only cross at crosswalks, stop signs or stoplights, and look both ways before crossing the street. For those cycling to and from school, remember: Bike helmets are mandatory for anyone under the age of 18.

As students head back to school by foot, bike and bus, please help keep them safe.
