The City of Yellowknife would like to remind residents of key dates to know for the upcoming election season.
The 2022 Municipal Election will take place on October 17, 2022, and is being conducted by mail-in ballot and in-person voting. Residents are eligible to vote if they are a Canadian citizen, have attained 18 years of age, and have resided in Yellowknife for 12 consecutive months immediately preceding the day they vote.
Residents should enumerate online or by returning the Enumeration Card they received in the mail by September 22 to ensure they get their ballot kit in the mail. Residents can also attend one of the Voters Assistance locations in person on October 17 to cast their vote.
Nominations for candidates running for Council opened September 6 and close on September 19 at 3 p.m. Eight Councillor and one Mayor position are available. It is the responsibility of each candidate to verify their eligibility to be nominated. Key dates for 2022 Municipal Election:
- Nominations for Candidates opened September 6;
- Nominations for Candidates close September 19 at 3 p.m.;
- Last day for Candidates to withdraw is September 21 at 3 p.m.;
- Last day to question the eligibility of a Candidate is September 22 at 3 p.m.;
- Eligible residents should enumerate and get on the Voters List by September 22 to ensure they receive their ballot kit in the mail;
- Last day to apply for a Proxy Form is October 12 at 3 p.m.;
- Residents should send their mail-in ballot with plenty of time to ensure it is received by the Returning Officer by 7 p.m. on October 17. Any ballots received after October 17 will not be counted;
- Drop off ballot at secure drop box before October 17 at 7 p.m.; and/or
- Vote in-person/have ballot dropped off by October 17 at 7 p.m.
