Further to the prior update on September 15, 2025, regarding the cyber incident that impacted the City of Yellowknife (the “City”), we can now advise residents that the City’s network has been safely restored and most city services have resumed as of September 22, 2025.
In response to the cybersecurity incident last week, the City enacted its incident response protocols, which included engaging third-party cybersecurity experts to conduct an investigation into the cause and scope of the incident. During the investigation, access to certain systems and programs was limited to ensure the ongoing security of our systems. We recognize that these steps, unfortunately, resulted in the disruption of some city services.
Over the past week, City staff and external cybersecurity experts have been reviewing city systems to determine the impact of the incident. To date, we have no evidence that any personal information was compromised in the incident. In the event our investigation determines that personal information was compromised, we will contact those individuals directly.
With restoration of the network, Point of sale (POS) systems are operational and patrons can use debit and credit cards to make payments at city facilities, library computers are available, and the 5-item limit on library patrons is lifted. City staff located at the Solid Waste Facility can also send and receive e-mails. Work is underway to restore CityExplorer. Click and Fix YK remains unavailable, and residents are asked to submit non-emergency issues related to City infrastructure by contacting CustomerService@yellowknife.ca.
Thank you for your patience and understanding while we’ve worked through this incident.
