The purpose of the Heritage Committee is to assist the City in an advisory capacity regarding the management of heritage interests of the City of Yellowknife.

The role of the Heritage Committee is to make recommendations to the appropriate Standing Committee of Council regarding the preservation of Yellowknife’s heritage and its value to the community.

The Yellowknife Heritage Committee was established by City Council in February 1985, by Heritage Committee By-law No. 2955.  The By-law was repealed and the current Terms of Reference were adopted on March 9, 2015.

Heritage By-law No. 4540 establishes the responsibilities of the Heritage Committee for designating and recognizing heritage resources, as well as the processes and criteria for the restoration of heritage resources.

On June 26, 2017, Council adopted the Heritage Committee 2017-2022 Strategic Plan.

On September 10, 2018, Council adopted the Intercultural Heritage and Placemaking Plan.

The Heritage Committee consists of the following members: Leslie Gordon, Stacie Arden-Smith (Councillor, Chair), Angela Lafferty (Yellowknives Dene Representative), Kateri Lynn (Yellowknives Dene Alternate Representative for Angela Lafferty), Nene Santos, Herb Mathisen, Sarah Woodman and Dr. Joanne Collins-Gonsalves.

The next meeting date for the Heritage Committee is to be determined.

Community Grant Funding and Heritage Grant Funding Information Session

Community Grant Funding and Heritage Grant Funding Information Presentation

 Heritage Project Funding

Among other activities, the Heritage Committee provides limited funding for groups with projects that celebrate Yellowknife's history and culture. This funding has been used to create heritage photo displays, heritage mobile applications, and heritage-related public art displays, but new ideas are always welcome!

Prior to submitting an application, please review the Heritage Committee Funding Policy.

To apply, complete the Heritage Committee Funding Program Application Form and submit it to the Community Services Department at communitygrants@yellowknife.ca.

The Heritage Committee reviews applications annually. The Heritage Funding application deadline is Monday, January 16, 2023 at 5:00 p.m.  Funding requests over $5,000 are subject to review by Council and should be received at least four weeks in advance. Organizations which have received funding from a City of Yellowknife Community Grant program in 2022 are ineligible to receive additional Heritage Committee funding. Applications for past events will not be considered.

For more information or to apply contact heritage@yellowknife.ca or call (867) 920-5646.
