The City of Yellowknife is setting up a new course for how our community moves. Today, the City officially launches Yellowknife’s Transportation Plan, Let’s Move YK.

Let’s Move YK will serve as a roadmap to guide how we move around our city for the next 25 years. It will set the stage for safer streets, more active transportation options, improved transit, and year-round accessibility tailored to Yellowknife’s northern climate and unique community needs.

“Transportation affects everyone.” said Mayor Hendriksen. “This plan is about building a network that is safe and accessible for all residents, whether you walk, cycle, drive, or take transit.”

The plan will prioritize infrastructure projects, identify supporting programs and policies, and align existing transportation-related plans into a single, coordinated document. It will address every mode of travel—walking, cycling, driving, transit, and more—while blending “hard” infrastructure improvements with “soft” measures like education and encouragement programs.

Have Your Say
Residents are invited to help shape the plan through surveys, interactive maps, and pop-up events:
- Community survey at PlaceSpeak: September 4 to October 3
- Pop-up #1: Farmers Market: September 16, 5:15 p.m. – 7:15 p.m.
- Pop-up #2: Aquatic Centre: September 17, 4 p.m. – 7 p.m.

Additionally, over 500 households across Yellowknife will be sent a letter invitation or phone call to take part in a random, statistically relevant survey to understand daily travel patterns and household demographics.

This work will build upon and harvest from other important planning initiatives such as the Community Plan Comprehensive Update, the Climate Action Plan, and more.

More details about the project and the engagement opportunities can be found on the project website (https://www.yellowknife.ca/TransportationPlan/) and PlaceSpeak (http://PlaceSpeak.com/letsmoveyk).
