The City of Yellowknife is inviting local businesses, entrepreneurs, and community stakeholders to share their feedback as part of an update to the City’s Business License By-law.

First adopted in 1988, the current by-law no longer fully reflects how businesses operate today. Changes in business models and technology mean some licensing requirements can be unclear, time-consuming, or out of step with current realities. The City is reviewing the by-law to help reduce red tape, improve clarity, and better support business growth in Yellowknife.

“When regulations fall behind, they can limit effectiveness rather than provide support,” said Mayor Ben Hendriksen. “This engagement is about listening carefully, understanding the challenges businesses face, and making changes that strengthen confidence in how the City works with our business community.”

The City is seeking feedback on what works well in the current by-law and where improvements are needed, including licensing processes, administrative requirements, and fees. Input from businesses and stakeholders will help inform updates to the by-law before it is brought forward to Council for consideration.
