The City of Yellowknife is reminding residents to use water regularly to help prevent residential sewer service lines from freezing this winter.

Frost levels have been observed as deep as 10 feet, which is significantly deeper than in a typical winter. This places some residential sewer service lines closer to the frost layer, increasing the risk of freeze-ups.

Regular daily water use helps keep service lines flowing and reduces the risk of freezing. Homes with larger families may already use enough water to keep service lines flowing. Homes with lower water use may wish to run warm water intermittently throughout the day to maintain flow. Each household is different, so the amount of water required will vary.

Issues related to frozen indoor pipes or household plumbing should be addressed by a plumbing or steaming contractor.

Residents who are experiencing numerous sewer service line freeze-ups despite regular water use may contact the City’s Public Works Division by emailing ws311@yellowknife.ca or calling (867) 766-5512 between 7:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., Monday to Friday.

The City thanks residents for their cooperation.
