The City of Yellowknife is aware of the encampment that has been established downtown. The City has been working collaboratively with the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) since August 2024 to find a sustainable solution to address unsheltered homelessness and encampments. The City recognizes the impact of the current encampment on businesses and residents and is taking steps within its legal authorities to respond to the situation.
The set-up of the current encampment appears to have included the construction of wooden structures. For occupant safety, City authorities will be attending the site to perform inspections for compliance with municipal by-laws and national safety standards. Appropriate steps will be taken to ensure the safety of occupants and nearby residents and businesses.
“The City remains committed to partnering with all orders of government to provide a safe, vibrant city that is inclusive for all residents” says Mayor Ben Hendriksen.
The City has also expanded its Street Outreach program to include both youth and adults. Line Drive is operated by Home Base and has a vehicle available daily as well as foot patrols in the downtown core. This provides a presence on the street and the ability to connect directly with members of the street-involved population who are in distress.
Encampments are a visual representation of a homelessness crisis that will take time and collaborative efforts from all levels of government to resolve. The City is committed to working with partners and stakeholders to address the urgent issue of encampments.
Residents are encouraged to call Line Drive at (867) 446-7233 if they see a person requiring assistance. Residents are advised to contact the RCMP for matters that impact public safety or are criminal in nature.
