The City of Yellowknife is marking Public Safety Telecommunicators Week (April 12–19, 2026) and extending its sincere appreciation to the dedicated team at the City of Yellowknife’s Public Safety Communications Centre.
Providing essential support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round, dispatchers play a critical role in coordinating emergency and municipal response services across the community. Over the past year, the team has managed more than 9,500 incidents, supporting fire, rescue, ambulance, municipal enforcement, and after-hours public works operations.
Dispatchers serve as a critical link between residents and emergency responders, working closely with the Northwest Territories 9-1-1 service, private alarm companies, and medevac air ambulance services. They manage multiple calls simultaneously, balancing urgency with coordination and clear communication in high-pressure situations. Their ability to remain calm, focused, and professional under pressure ensures first responders receive timely and accurate information when it matters most.
The City recognizes and values the expertise, commitment, and professionalism of its dispatch team. Their contributions are essential to maintaining the safety and well-being of Yellowknife residents.
Residents are encouraged to take a moment this week to acknowledge and thank the individuals who work behind the scenes to keep the community safe.
