The 2025 National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Fire Prevention Week™ will take place from October 5 to 11, 2025. The City of Yellowknife is pleased to support this year’s campaign – “Charge into Fire Safety™: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home.”
The campaign highlights the importance of safe purchase, charging, and disposal of lithium-ion batteries—now widely used in household electronics and devices. These batteries can pose serious fire risks if not handled properly.
Throughout the week, the City will share safety tips like the ones below and raise public awareness on this critical issue.
3 key steps for safely handling of Lithium-Ion batteries:
-
Buy safely – Choose products that display a recognized safety certification mark, such as UL, ETL, or CSA.
-
Charge properly – Use only chargers provided or approved by the manufacturer. Do not overcharge and avoid charging on soft or flammable surfaces.
-
Dispose responsibly – Do not place lithium-ion batteries in household waste or recycling bins.
-
Drop them off at the Bottle Depot (359 Old Airport Road) free of charge;
-
Or take them to the Solid Waste Facility, subject to a $16.50 tipping fee per vehicle.
