The City of Yellowknife (the City) and PSAC Local X0345, as represented by the UNW (the Union), returned to the bargaining table on Monday, February 13, 2023.  The City is disappointed to confirm that the Union chose to end bargaining and left the table at 6:00 p.m. without responding to the City’s latest offer.

The City has offered a fair deal, including base wage increases of 2% per year for 2022 and 2023 (totaling 4% more than what employees are currently making). The City also increased its previous offer by adding,  a one-time inflation adjustment and payment of a signing bonus: $1,500 for full time employees, $750 for part-time and seasonal employees and $250 for casual part-time employees, paid as a lump-sum on ratification.

In addition to the items presented in the City’s most recent proposal, the City offers an attractive compensation package for employees. On top of competitive wages, full time employees in the PSAC bargaining unit also receive:

  • Pension plan with an 8% annual contribution from the employer;
  • $5,100 per year in Vacation Travel Allowances;
  • $1,400 per year for Housing Allowance;
  • 15 to 30 days of paid vacation leave every year, based on length of service;
  • 4 days paid vacation travel time every year;
  • 15 paid sick-days every year that can be accumulated with no limit;
  • 13 paid holidays (e.g., Canada Day, Thanksgiving, etc);
  • Paid special leave days for life events like marriage or bereavement;
  • Severance upon retirement up to a maximum of 25 weeks;
  • $1,000 long service bonus for every 5 years of service.

The City is committed to negotiating a collective agreement that is fair, respects the important role City employees play in Yellowknife, and is affordable for Yellowknife’s residents and businesses.  The City remains available and ready to resume bargaining.

The City recommends that residents visit City's website for the most up to date information on impacted services.
