The City of Yellowknife (the City) is looking for feedback on what kind of flooring the community would like to see installed on one of the fields at the Fieldhouse. In 2022, Council allocated approximately $300,000 for this project, which is enough to upgrade one field. Replacing the other side of the field is a future project the City is anticipating, with no official date at this time.

There are two options:

  1. Turf, which would be a similar to the turf that is currently installed inside the Fieldhouse. This option would allow for most of the existing activities and sports at the Fieldhouse, such as soccer, to continue.
  2. A multi-use synthetic material that is similar to a gymnasium floor. This option would allow for new programs to be introduced to the facility, such as volleyball or futsal. With this option, trade shows and other activities could also be offered in the off-season.

Voters are encouraged to consult with other members of their user group, including program coordinators, before making a decision to ensure they understand which option is best suited to their sport or activity. Both options have a number of purposes, along with a different set of advantages and disadvantages depending on how you use the field.

Both options have the advantage of being made up of interlocking sections. This means that any damage in smaller areas can be easily replaced or repaired.

The City is hoping to increase use of the facility in non-peak hours with the upgraded surface.

Residents will have until Sunday, December 10, at 9:00 p.m. to provide their feedback. Residents can complete the poll on the City’s PlaceSpeak page or go to the Fieldhouse during regular working hours to see examples of the two options and vote.

Residents who have additional feedback can email the City at communityservices@yellowknife.ca.

Once this feedback is reviewed, the City will issue a Request for Proposal (RFP) for the project to be completed. It is expected that the new flooring will be installed during the summer of 2024.
