As Yellowknifers gear up for another busy winter on the trails, the City is encouraging all snowmobile operators and riders to prioritize safety. Responsible riding helps protect you, your passengers, and everyone sharing our winter landscapes.
Snowmobile use is permitted only in authorized areas — Zones A and B, and is prohibited in designated red zones. Operators must follow all posted and regulated speed limits:
- 45 km/h maximum on roads
- 30 km/h maximum where no speed limit is posted
- 30 km/h maximum in off-road Zone A
- 70 km/h maximum in off-road Zone B

Authorised Areas for Snowmobiling and Designated Speed Zones
All operators and riders are required to wear helmets, remain sober, and stay alert for pedestrians and other trail, road, and lake users. Riders are encouraged to reduce speed, maintain a safe stopping distance, and remain mindful of changing conditions. Dressing in warm layers and informing someone of your planned route and expected return time are also recommended.
Snowmobiles must be properly registered and insured before operation, and a valid City snowmobile licence plate with current registration-year tags must be clearly displayed. The Municipal Enforcement Division (MED) will continue regular patrols on lakes and trails to support safe riding and ensure compliance with Snowmobile Bylaw No. 3722.
The City also reminds residents that:
- Children under 12 are not permitted to operate snowmobiles within Yellowknife.
- Youth ages 12 to 15 may operate a snowmobile in off-road areas only if they have completed the City of Yellowknife Snowmobile Safety Course and License and are under the immediate supervision of a person 18 or older who holds a valid driver’s licence or has completed the Safety Course.
By following these safety measures, we can all make the most of Yellowknife’s winter trails safely and enjoy every moment on the ice and snow.
