On Thursday, May 29, 2025, at 2:07 a.m., the Yellowknife Fire Division (YKFD) responded to a report of visible flames on the third floor of Franklin House, located at 5009, 48 Street.

Upon arrival, firefighters observed flames emerging from a third-floor window. Crews acted swiftly, applying water to suppress the fire. Building evacuation efforts had already commenced prior to YKFD's arrival.

Firefighters entered the building and successfully extinguished the fire within the affected unit, effectively containing it to the unit of origin. One tenant sustained minor burns but did not require hospital transport. No other injuries have been reported at this time. All tenants were able to return to their homes within an hour and a half of YKFD’s arrival on scene.

The fire was determined to have originated from a window-mounted air conditioning unit. As the cause is not considered suspicious, the Fire Marshal will not be conducting a formal investigation.

The Yellowknife Fire Division extends its appreciation to the Municipal Enforcement Division and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police for their support during this incident.
