The City of Yellowknife extends its deepest condolences to the residents of Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, following the tragic mass shooting that occurred on Tuesday, February 10, 2026.

Mayor Ben Hendriksen, on behalf of the City of Yellowknife Council and the community, issued the following statement:
“Yesterday, we learned of the heartbreaking news from Tumbler Ridge. A mass shooting in a Canadian community is something that shakes us all. It is painful and deeply shocking to witness such violence in a country we cherish as safe, welcoming, and compassionate.

Our thoughts are with the families and friends who have lost loved ones. No words can lessen the grief they are experiencing, but we stand with them in solidarity and in sorrow. We also extend our sincere wishes for a full and swift recovery to those who were injured.

Canada has long been known as a nation defined by care, respect, and community. Moments like this test us, but they also remind us of the importance of looking after one another. In times of grief, connection matters. I encourage anyone who is struggling to reach out to trusted friends, family members, or community support. Healing begins with conversation and shared strength.

Words cannot express the pain and suffering being felt in Tumbler Ridge with the senseless and painful loss of a community’s children. The City of Yellowknife stands with all municipalities, large and small, in supporting the families and loved ones affected by this tragic event.”

The City encourages residents who may be affected by this news to seek support through NWT Help Line 8-1-1 or Mental Health Support Services.
