Today marks an important moment for the North. The City of Yellowknife and the Town of Inuvik have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) formalizing a partnership that reflects a shared commitment to collaboration, coordination, and advocacy on issues that matter deeply to northern communities.

This MOU establishes a framework for joint advocacy on Arctic sovereignty and security, defence infrastructure investments, and economic development, ensuring both communities benefit from growth and strategic investments in the North.

Mayor Ben Hendriksen, City of Yellowknife, said, “This agreement with Inuvik ensures that northern communities are active partners in shaping the future of the Arctic. By aligning our planning, advocacy, and development priorities, we can turn strategic investments into tangible benefits for residents and strengthen the North for generations to come.”

Mayor Peter Clarkson, Town of Inuvik, added, “This MOU with Yellowknife reflects our shared commitment to strengthening the North and ensuring our communities have a strong voice in shaping Canada’s Arctic future.”

With opportunities and challenges in the North evolving rapidly, both communities recognize the urgency of working together to streamline planning, coordination, and advocacy on shared priorities. The agreement creates efficiencies where possible, ensuring northern communities are prepared to respond, adapt, and benefit from future federal and territorial investments.
