As of this afternoon at 1:00 p.m., the Community Government of Whatì has begun calling back essential workers to the community. Whatì evacuees are invited to return home starting tomorrow, September 6 at 10:00 a.m.

Essential workers are returning to Whatì to resume services prior to the general public’s return. Evacuees are encouraged to return no earlier than September 6 to allow for critical services to get back up and running. Whatì residents should prepare to face smoky conditions on their journey home and drive with caution, especially in areas where work is being conducted. Extra tips for a safe return home can be found on the GNWT’s website.

Evacuees are advised that the Yellowknife Evacuation Centre will close effective Sunday, September 7 at 12 p.m. Once closed, services such as accommodation, meals, and free access to amenities, will no longer be available. Breakfast will be the last meal served on Sunday, September 7.

The City of Yellowknife continues to coordinate with the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) to ensure remaining Fort Providence evacuees receive continued support.

The Northwestel field in the Fieldhouse will remain closed to the public as our staff work towards getting the field back to regular working order. This work will be completed before the end of the coming week, at which time the public will be notified. We thank everyone for their continued patience and cooperation. All other amenities and programs within the Fieldhouse and Multiplex will re-open to the public on Monday.

The City of Yellowknife thanks the Government of the GNWT, the Tłı̨chǫ Government, and the Salvation Army for their professionalism, dedication and support in delivering essential services to evacuees.

We also thank Yellowknife residents for their generous donations, and Rio Tinto Diavik Diamond Mine for sponsoring access to the Aquatic Centre, providing comfort and relief to many during a challenging time.
