The City of Yellowknife has completed the first round of public engagement for the new Transportation Plan, Let’s Move YK, marking an important milestone in shaping how people will move around the city over the next 25 years.
Through surveys, interactive online maps, and community pop-up events, more than 1,000 residents shared their experiences, priorities, and ideas for improving transportation in Yellowknife. This input reflects how people travel today and the challenges they face year-round in a northern climate.
“Residents were clear about what’s working, what’s not, and where improvements are needed to support safe, reliable movement across Yellowknife,” said Mayor Ben Hendriksen. “This first phase gives us a strong, community-informed foundation. As we move forward, we’re including what we heard from the public with the latest data on the City’s current conditions and lessons from other jurisdictions and winter cities to develop draft strategies, network maps, and actions that will guide transportation investments for years to come. Over the next 25 years we are going to build a network that is safe and accessible for all residents, whether they walk, cycle, drive, or take transit.”
What We Heard
The feedback collected during this phase has been summarized in a What We Heard Report, which is now available on the project website. The report captures key themes and priorities raised by residents and will directly inform the development of draft transportation strategies and network options.
Public input is being used alongside two other key sources to shape the plan:
- Current Conditions Report – a detailed assessment of Yellowknife’s existing transportation network and use patterns.
- Best Practices & Jurisdictional Scan – a review of successful approaches from other northern and Canadian communities.
Together, these three sources provide a robust evidence base for developing draft recommendations that reflect community priorities, technical realities, and lessons learned from other jurisdictions.
Next Steps
Engagement activities took place throughout September and October, involving residents, Indigenous governments, and community organizations. With this input in hand, the project team is now moving into the next phase of Let’s Move YK, which will focus on developing:
- Draft transportation strategies
- Priority actions
- Conceptual network maps for walking, cycling, transit, and vehicles
These drafts will be shared publicly for review and feedback before the Transportation Plan is finalized.
More Engagement to Come
Additional public engagement is planned for winter 2026, when residents will have the opportunity to review and comment on the draft Transportation Plan. Feedback from this phase will help refine the plan before it is presented to Council.
