With just a few days to go until Canada Day 2020, the City of Yellowknife is pleased to announce more details for the virtual celebrations, supported by the Government of Canada. On the Virtual Canada Day webpage, which will go live at 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 1, 2020, you will find welcome videos from dignitaries, activity packages, details on a Yellowknife House Concert, and so much more! This page will be updated throughout the day.

“Live from Yellowknife!” a House Concert brought to Yellowknife by the City via Zoom, will make its debut at 1:00 p.m. on Canada Day. The show, hosted by AJ Goodwin, will feature performances from Grace Clark, Karen and Attila Novak, and the Andrea Bettger Band. The event is free to attend but participants need to register to receive the login information.

“With these virtual performances, artists aren’t simply recording into their camera, they’re participating in an interactive virtual gathering where they can see the participants and the participants can see each other,” said Mayor Rebecca Alty. “There is a deeper emotional connection to the performance when you can watch with friends who live down the street or are 3000 km away, and you can show your support to the performer.”

Canada Corner, a special broadcast with Cabin Radio sponsored by Northwestel, is also on the line-up and will air at noon, following the national broadcast, Canada Day Across the Country.  The show features a visit from Mayor Rebecca Alty, the Yellowknives Dene Drummers, Canadian Poetry from Paul McKee, and YK Dance. Canada Corner listeners will have the opportunity to win an iPad 7, courtesy of Northwestel. Stay tuned on the City of Yellowknife Facebook page @OurYellowknife for contest details leading up to the show.

Tune in to CBC and various online platforms at 11:00 a.m. to enjoy the national broadcast, featuring Northwest Territories own Leela Gilday. More information on Canada Day Across the Country available on the Canadian Government's Canada Day page. For the latest on Yellowknife’s celebrations, visit our Canada Day page.
