For Immediate Release: Niven Lake Trail Improvements

Posted on Monday October 26, 2015

The City of Yellowknife is improving a portion of the Niven Lake Trail; specifically the connection between the Northern Utilities Limited (NUL) substation and the access to Haener Drive. Please see the attached map for site identification. These improvements will include removal of a portion of rock to provide better accessibility to the trail approximately 3 meters in width for a length of approximately 6 meters and the placement of gravel to provide a smoother walking surface. The changes will improve safety and accessibility for commuter traffic to and from the downtown and other commercial and residential areas of the city via 49th Avenue.

The City of Yellowknife is also exploring the possibility of obtaining a portion of the Yellowknife Access Road. If the City acquires this portion of the highway, the current proposal is to include sidewalks and controlled crossings to improve safety for residents.  These trail improvements will form part of the larger neighborhood connections.

The City is seeking feedback on this proposed trail improvements until Monday, November 2, 2015. Site tours are available by contacting Councillor Adrian Bell or City Staff (booked as requested).
