The City of Yellowknife is proud to have been selected to participate in the development of the Smart Energy Communities Scorecard. QUEST and Pollution Probe are bringing together six communities across Canada to help develop a roadmap on how to transition towards being a “Smart Energy” community, and evaluate their progress along the way. “Smart Energy” communities improve energy efficiency, enhance reliability, cut costs, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The Scorecard is a tool that will help benchmark and evaluate the progress of Smart Energy Communities in Canada.  The City’s involvement in the consultation process and pilot project will ensure that proposed methodologies and principles consider Northern energy perspectives

Bridgewater, Nova Scotia; Calgary, Alberta; Grande Prairie, Alberta; Inuvik, Northwest Territories; and, London, Ontario will join the City of Yellowknife in the Smart Energy Communities Scorecard pilot project.

Together, the pilot communities will provide insight on how best to gauge a community’s progress towards energy efficiency.  At the end of the pilot, Yellowknife will be amongst the first municipalities to get a Scorecard Report that will contribute to our ongoing community energy planning efforts.

“This project couldn’t have come at a better time, as Yellowknife is charting our course towards energy efficiency, reducing our dependence on fossil fuel, and looking to reduce our impact on climate change. I am proud that the City of Yellowknife continues to be a leader in energy sustainability and has been selected to take part in this project.” Yellowknife Mayor Mark Heyck.
