The City of Yellowknife, along with our partners Ecology North and Northlands Utilities, would like to invite residents and visitors to the Smart Cities Challenge Extraordinary Skies Event on Tuesday November 20, 2018 to promote the Smart Cities Challenge.

The Smart Cities Challenge is a Canada wide competition between municipalities and governments aimed at empowering communities to improve residents’ lives through data and innovative solutions. Reducing the light pollution in Yellowknife is a fundamental part of our proposal for the Smart Cities Challenge. Yellowknife’s bid focuses on transforming the traditional lamp post into a beacon of sustainability and has been selected as one of the five finalists in the $5 million dollar category.  If successful, Yellowknife lampposts will be outfitted with a range of smart technology, including light dimming technology, that is intended to enhance Yellowknife for residents and visitors.

Join us at the Yellowknife Visitor Centre at City Hall on November 20 for a pre-view of bringing a dark sky to downtown Yellowknife.

Doors open at 5:00 P.M. and light refreshments will be served. At 5:20 P.M. lights on Somba k'e Civic Plaza and on the exterior of City Hall will be dimmed for a brief dark sky demonstration.  Staff from the Smart Cities Challenge Project Team will be on site between 5:00 P.M and 6:00 P.M. to provide more information about the project.
