Effective immediately, the mandatory local fire ban on open-air fires, issued on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, has been lifted following recent precipitation. Burning is now permitted in all approved fire pits within the City of Yellowknife.

Before starting a recreational fire, please remember the following:

  • All recreational fires within the municipal boundary must be contained in an approved fire pit and require a valid permit, unless located in a designated Territorial Park area.
  • Recreational fires must be actively supervised at all times and fully extinguished using the SOAK–STIR–SOAK method (soak with water, stir the ashes, and soak again repeatedly until cold to the touch) before leaving the area.
  • A means of extinguishing the fire (such as water, sand, or a fire extinguisher) must be readily available at all times.
  • Avoid using fire pits during periods of strong or gusty winds, as embers may spread and pose a fire hazard.
  • Burning of garbage in fire pits is strictly prohibited.
  • The burning of yard waste is not permitted in recreational fire pits and requires a separate permit.

The Yellowknife Fire Division (YKFD) reminds residents to continue practicing safe fire habits when using fire pits. The public is encouraged to remain vigilant and stay informed through official City updates. YKFD continues to monitor fire conditions closely and will advise the public of any changes as they arise. A fire ban may be reinstated at any time should weather or environmental conditions elevate the risk of fire.

The City appreciates all residents and visitors for their cooperation and continued commitment to fire safety. For up-to-date information on fire bans and wildfire status, please visit: https://www.yellowknife.ca/en/living-here/wildfire-updates.aspx.
