On Monday, May 11, at approximately 11:10 a.m., the City of Yellowknife Fire Division (YKFD) responded to a reported structure fire at Banke Crescent.
Upon arrival, responding crews observed flames and smoke emanating from the front of the building. A total of 16 firefighters were deployed to the scene, and the fire was quickly brought under control and fully extinguished. Crews remained on scene until approximately 1:06 p.m. to complete overhaul operations and ensure the area was safe and secure.
The fire was successfully contained to the area of origin at the front of the structure, and no injuries were reported. The Municipal Enforcement Division (MED) assisted in managing traffic in the area throughout the incident. Following an investigation, the cause of the fire remains undetermined.
Fire safety devices were present and operational within the residence at the time of the incident.
The YKFD would like to remind residents of the importance of maintaining working smoke alarms in their homes. Smoke alarms should be tested monthly, batteries replaced at least once each year, and units replaced after 10 years, or after 7 years for combination smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms.
