The City of Yellowknife is pleased to release the Climate Action Plan 2026–2036, a 10-year strategy to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and strengthen the community’s resilience to climate change.

Yellowknife is currently experiencing the social, economic, and environmental effects of human-caused climate change. Through this Plan, the City will build strong partnerships and implement meaningful solutions that reduce emissions while enhancing resilience. The actions outlined in the Plan will also bring additional benefits, including financial savings, energy security, improved health and well-being, and stronger community connections.

The Plan is structured around six key themes, each with associated goals, strategies, and actions:
  1. Sustainable Transportation
  2. Waste Management
  3. Resilient and Efficient Buildings and Infrastructure
  4. Responsible Land-Use and Planning
  5. Governance and Accountability
  6. Community Preparedness and Emergency Response

The Plan was approved by Council on February 25, 2026. The City appreciates members of the public, stakeholders, and rightsholders who participated in the engagement process, through surveys, roundtables, and ongoing dialogue, providing thoughtful input that helped shape the Plan.

Implementing the Plan
Over the next 10 years, the City will work to implement the Plan as efficiently as possible. This will require collaboration and support across all City departments, the public, and partnership with the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) and local Indigenous governments. The City will keep the community informed on progress and opportunities to participate in implementation activities.

Together, we can make Yellowknife a healthy, resilient community for everyone, now and into the future.
