Explore modern gold mining through new technologies, environmental safeguards and Northern experiences.

How has gold mining changed over the years? What environmental safeguards are in place today? How has technology advanced, and what can we learn from mining experiences elsewhere in the North?

Join the City of Yellowknife for a free, full-day Modern Gold Mining Workshop on Saturday, November 21, 2026, at the Tree of Peace Friendship Centre.

The workshop will bring together experts and Northern leaders to explore how gold mining has evolved over the past 70 years, including advances in technology, environmental protection, regulatory oversight and Indigenous participation. Discussions will also draw on experiences from Nunavut and consider what these lessons could mean for communities in the North Slave region.

Facilitated by Det'on Cho Environmental, the workshop will feature presentations and discussions with experts and Northern leaders, including:

  • Tayna MacIntosh, Chair, Mackenzie Valley Land and Water Board
  • Joe Campbell and Allen Sexton, Professional Geologists and longstanding resource advisors to the Kivalliq Inuit Association
