Public Works Overhead Truck Filling Procedure

The City of Yellowknife currently has two overhead water fill points at Pumphouse #4, located at the intersection of Kam Lake Road and Old Airport Road Intersection.

Below is the Procedure for Overhead Water Pipe Truck Filling:

  1. Align the truck or trailer with the overhead water-fill piping
  2. While standing on the ground, manoeuvre the overhead piping with the rope that is attached to the horizontal section of piping. This pipe can be moved from side to side, and in the downward direction.  It will also automatically move in the upward direction due to spring tension in the actuator where the horizontal and vertical piping meet
  3. Secure the pipe in place using the rope attached to the piping so that minimal spillage occurs once the water is turned on
  4. Using your specific utility account password, ensure proper volume is entered into the control panel and activate water filling
  5. After filling, unsecure the rope from the truck, and move the piping away from the truck
  6. Close the insulated door on the control panel. This protects the interface screen from the elements and keeps it warm enough to function in the winter weather. Failure to do so will cause the electronics to fail and the station will become temporarily unavailable

Note: Any truck that will require additional steps for working on top of the tank, for example, to open and close various types of fill points, MUST have a written fall protection plan with proof of fall protection training submitted to the City of Yellowknife before an account can be activated.

If there are any safety or operational concerns such as

  • Slippery ground conditions
  • The rope or piping has been damaged
  • Spring tension adjustments on the actuator are needed, or
  • Control panel issues

Please contact Public Works at (867) 920-5600 during normal business hours or (867) 920-5699 for after-hour emergencies. You can also email garageadministration@yellowknife.ca.
