Automatic Recount

Under the Local Authorities Elections Act, an automatic recount is required where two or more candidates are separated by four or fewer votes, and one or more of those candidates would be elected while one or more would not be elected based on the initial count.

No automatic recount was required for the 2026 Municipal Election.

Request for a Recount

A candidate who disagrees with the results may apply in writing to the Returning Officer for a recount within 72 hours after voting closes. Candidates must submit their request no later than 7:00 p.m. on October 22, 2026.

Requests must be submitted by email to @email or in person at the Office of the Returning Officer (3rd Floor, YK Centre East, 4915, 48 Street, Yellowknife). If a recount is requested, the date, time, and location of the recount will be announced by the Returning Officer once confirmed.

Any voter may, in accordance with the Local Authorities Elections Act, apply to a judge of the Supreme Court of the Northwest Territories for a recount of the ballots, by way of Originating Notice, within 14 days of the Returning Officer declaring the election results. The application must be filed no later than November 2, 2026.

The New Council

The Council-elect transition will begin next week, with the newly elected Mayor and eight City Councillors attending a swearing-in ceremony in the Council Chamber at City Hall on Monday, November 2, 2026.

The City of Yellowknife congratulates the newly elected Mayor and Council and looks forward to working together to build a strong, vibrant and sustainable community.
