The City of Yellowknife invites residents and visitors to celebrate Canada Day on Wednesday, July 1, with a full day of free festivities that celebrate the people, cultures, and community spirit that make Yellowknife such a vibrant northern community.
"Yellowknife has always been shaped by its people. From the First Peoples whose connection to this land spans generations, to those who have come from across Canada and around the world to build a life in the North, every person has helped shape the welcoming, resilient, and vibrant community we proudly call home," said Mayor Ben Hendriksen.
"Canada Day is an opportunity to celebrate not only our country, but also one another. It's a chance to reconnect with neighbours, welcome newcomers, celebrate Indigenous and multicultural traditions, support local artists and businesses, and reflect on the shared experiences that bring us together. As our community continues to grow and evolve, it's these moments of connection that strengthen our sense of belonging and remind us what makes Yellowknife such a special place to call home."
The celebration begins at 11:00 a.m. with the Canada Day Parade, organized by the Rotary Club of Yellowknife. This year's parade theme, Northern Animals, will bring colourful floats, community groups, businesses, and local organizations together as the parade travels from the ATCO Aquatic Centre parking lot along 50 Avenue and 48 Street to Sir John Franklin High School.
Following the parade, celebrations continue at Somba K'e Park from 12:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with an opening ceremony, live entertainment, cultural performances, family-friendly activities, local food vendors, and the Global Village: Food of the World Sampling Market, presented in partnership with the Multicultural Community of Yellowknife.
Throughout the afternoon, visitors can enjoy live music, dance, drumming, and cultural performances celebrating traditions from around the world. Families can also enjoy children's activities, including bouncy castles, a foam party from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., balloon art, and more.
The Global Village invites visitors to experience flavours from around the world through complimentary food samples, available while supplies last. Local food vendors will also be serving a variety of food and refreshments throughout the day, offering something for everyone to enjoy.
Residents and visitors are encouraged to wear their red and white, bring family and friends, and spend the day celebrating together at Somba K'e Park.
