Fire ban in Yellowknife

This sculpture, created in 2009 by Yellowknife artist Francois Thibault depicts three drum dancers. It is located at the edge of Frame Lake in front of Yellowknife's City Hall.

Due to the current extremely dry conditions, the City of Yellowknife is implementing a fire ban that will be in effect starting Thursday, June 20, 2024 at 12:00 p.m. (noon). The fire ban prohibits open air burning within city limits, including the use of approved fire pits, and will remain in effect until further notice.

The use of camp-stoves and enclosed BBQs are permitted. Propane-fueled burners are also permitted for heating and/or cooking, but must be used within the confines of the fire pit.

“The fire ban is a proactive measure to reduce the risk of fires starting from camp fires, bonfires or other open sourced flames within city limits. We all have a role to play in preventing wildfire,” said Yellowknife Fire Chief, Nelson Johnson.

The local fire ban does not affect Canadian Standards Association (CSA) approved propane appliances.
