Following the Government of the Northwest Territories' announcement that Fort Simpson evacuees may begin returning home, the City of Yellowknife announces that the Reception Centre at the Yellowknife Multiplex will close today, Saturday, July 18, at 7:00 p.m.
Since opening on June 29, 2026, the Reception Centre has supported residents displaced by the wildfire emergency by providing a safe and welcoming space where they can access accommodations, meals, information, and essential services. The City extends its sincere appreciation to City staff, emergency response partners, volunteers, community organizations, and everyone who supported evacuees throughout the response.
Evacuees who require additional information regarding their return home or ongoing supports are encouraged to contact the Government of the Northwest Territories Department of Municipal and Community Affairs at @email.
Yellowknife Multiplex to Remain Temporarily Closed
Following the closure of the Reception Centre, the Yellowknife Multiplex will remain temporarily closed while City crews restore the facility for regular public use. This work includes removing temporary infrastructure, completing cleaning and maintenance activities, and preparing the facility to safely welcome back residents, user groups, and visitors.
The City will announce the reopening date for the Yellowknife Multiplex once restoration activities are complete. Updates will be shared through the City's website and social media channels.
The City thanks residents for their patience and understanding during this transition and looks forward to welcoming the community back to the Yellowknife Multiplex once the facility has been restored for regular public use.
