On Monday, July 21, 2025, shortly after midnight, the Yellowknife Fire Division (YKFD) responded to a reported fire behind Sir John Franklin High School.

Upon arrival, firefighters located a snowmobile fully engulfed in flames within the back compound of the school. The fire had begun to spread to an adjacent shed. After putting out the snowmobile fire, firefighters immediately turned their attention to the shed. Following containment of the exterior flames on the shed, firefighters entered the structure and successfully extinguished a secondary fire discovered inside.

The cause of the fire remains undetermined at this time. The investigation has been transferred to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).

The City acknowledges and appreciates the assistance of the Municipal Enforcement Division and the RCMP during the response.
