Vote in the Upcoming Municipal Election

The next municipal election is coming up on Monday, October 19, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Eligible Yellowknife residents will vote for one Mayor and eight City Councillors for the 2026–2030 term.
Election Day is an opportunity to make your voice count and take part in choosing Yellowknife’s next municipal leadership.

Who Can Vote?
To be eligible to vote, a person must:

• be 18 years of age or older;
• be a Canadian citizen; and
• have been a resident of Yellowknife for 12 consecutive months immediately before Election Day.

For the 2026 election, this means eligible voters must have been residents of Yellowknife since October 19, 2025.

Voters List Underway
All eligible voters should register with Elections NWT. Residents may also call (867) 767-9100 to be registered.
The deadline to make revisions to the Voters List is October 9, 2026.

The updated list will be available on September 18, 2026, at the Office of the Returning Officer, City Hall, Yellowknife Public Library, Yellowknife Multiplex, and the ATCO Aquatic Centre.

Notice Calling for Nomination of Candidates
Nominations open at 9:00 a.m. on September 8, 2026. The nomination packages are available on the City’s website and at the Office of the Returning Officer.

To qualify as a candidate, an individual must be a Canadian citizen, be at least 18 years of age, have been a resident of Yellowknife continuously since October 19th and not be disqualified under sections 18, 19, or 20 of the Local Authorities Elections Act.

The nomination form must be completed, signed, and filed with the Returning Officer by 3:00 p.m. on September 21, 2026, and accepted by the Returning Officer. The form must include the signatures of two eligible Yellowknife voters, witnessed by a Commissioner for Oaths for the NWT, Notary Public, or the Returning Officer.

Late nominations cannot be accepted.

Candidates will be announced by the Returning Officer on September 21, 2026.

Voting at the Office of the Returning Officer
Eligible voters who are unable to vote on Election Day may vote at the Office of the Returning Officer from October 5 to October 16, 2026, Monday to Friday, between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., excluding statutory holidays. No appointment is required.

Voters must bring government-issued identification, such as a driver's licence showing their name and residence, when exploring alternative voting methods at the Returning Officer’s Office.

Election Day
Election Day is Monday, October 19, 2026. The 5 voting stations will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.:

1. Weledeh Catholic School — 5023, 46 Street
2. Tree of Peace Friendship Centre — 5011, 51 Street
3. École Įtłʼǫ̀ — 5700, 51A Avenue
4. Yellowknife Multiplex — 41 Kam Lake Road
5. Range Lake North School — 170 Borden Drive

If you are not on the Voters List, you may still be able to vote by completing the required declaration of eligibility on Election Day at any Voting Station. If you require assistance, please visit one of the stations mentioned above for support.

The City will also provide free transit on Election Day to provide residents with access to voting stations. Transit schedules are available online or through the PassioGO! App.

Note: It is an offence under the Local Authorities Election Act (s.68, 106, 110) for a person to vote if the person is not eligible to do so.
