Step 1: Register your business with NWT Corporate Registries
Submit an application and register your business name.

Step 2: Get a business licence from the City
A business licence is legally required to operate, no matter the type of business.

Step 3: Register with the CRA (Canada Revenue Agency)
For tax purposes and payroll, it is essential that a business register with the CRA. Once registered, you will receive a Business Number (BN)
Note: A BN is only mandatory if you incorporate, hire employees, or have over $30k in annual taxable sales (requiring a GST/HST account). Small, sole-proprietor businesses making less than this threshold generally do not need one.

Step 4: Set up a Business Bank Account
Whether it's a savings account or a business credit card, this will help you identify the flow of income coming in and out of your business.

Step 5: Register for NWT Payroll Tax
The NWT Payroll Tax is a 2% tax on income earned by employees working in the territory. Although the employee absorbs this tax, it is the responsibility of the employer to withhold this tax and pay it directly to the GNWT.

Make sure to take advantage of the programs available in our community. Register for: Bidding Opportunities with the City, the Business Incentive Policy Registry, and the GNWT Contract Event website.
Prior to the Business License being issued, you will need to provide proof of:
- Propane / Gas inspection (if applicable) - call the Government of the Northwest Territories at (867) 767-9043, and ask to speak to a Gas Inspector
- Health Inspection - call the Government of the Northwest Territories at (867) 767-9066, and ask to speak to a Health Inspector
- Proof of 2 million dollar liability insurance listing the City of Yellowknife as an additionally insured.
Once a Business License is issued, you will be required to sign a Food Vendor Agreement.
The City's Business By-law No. 3451 states that all vendors must comply with Territorial & Federal laws/regulation. This includes:

Once the Food Vendor Agreement is signed, a parking permit is required, which is purchased at City Hall.
