New Parking Meter App Launches

The City is pleased to announce that as of Tuesday, August 16, 2022, Passport Parking Canada will be available for residents as the City's new parking meter app.

Parking meters will continue to accept coins, as this has always been the primary method of payment. For their convenience, residents can download and use the app called "Passport Parking Canada." Please ensure you download this app specifically as other apps will not work.  As with the previous interface, users can then enter the zone and space number, as well as payment details. Users will be charged the same convenience fee as with the previous app, of $0.35 per transaction.

Using the app: Each parking meter has a decal identifying the zone and space number. When entering parking zone and space numbers in the app, users should use the information currently on meters. This information, which was used for the previous app, is compatible with Passport Parking Canada. Please click the link below to see a step by step guide. If you encounter any problems with the app or parking meters, or if you have any questions, please contact us at (867) 920-5630.

Passport Canada Step by Step Guide

General Information

The Municipal Enforcement Division is responsible for the enforcement of the Highway Traffic By-law No. 5055, the All-Terrain Vehicles By-law No. 3054. Municipal Enforcement Officers also have enforcement responsibilities under the NWT Motor Vehicles Act and Regulations and All-Terrain Vehicles Act and Regulations.

Traffic enforcement is a key area of focus for Municipal Enforcement Officers as it deal directly with public safety. Officers often stop drivers for thing like: speeding, failing to stop at stop signs or red lights, using a restricted electronic device, failing to wear a seat belt, no registration and/or insurance, expired and/or suspended drivers licenses and many other things.

Officers can also stop people they suspect of operating a vehicle while being adversely affected by alcohol, drugs or fatigue. Officers have the authority and ability to suspend drivers licence for up to 24 hours roadside, if they reasonably believe a person's ability to operate a vehicle is adversely affected by alcohol, drugs or fatigue.

What to Do if You are Pulled Over

  • Find a safe place to stop, try to avoid corners, hills or intersections.
  • Remain calm and stay in your vehicle, unless directed otherwise.
  • Provide all requested documentation/information to the officer.
  • Do not leave or drive away until the officers advises that you can.
  • Ask the officer questions if you are unsure of something.
  • If you receive a ticket, you are able to contest it in court by following the instructions on the face of the ticket. Do not dispute it on the side of the road as this poses a safety risk to yourself and the officer by extending the amount of time in traffic.

Please call us with any questions or concerns at (867) 920-5630. Please ask to speak with a supervisor if you have concerns with how you were treated or the conduct of the officer.

Parking Enforcement

Officers respond to various types of parking complaints throughout the City such as: parking in a fire lane/in front of a fire hydrant, parking in a no parking zone, parking in front of a driveway, parking on a road for more than 72 hours and parking in an accessible parking stall, among others.

Officers also check and enforce parking meters in the Central Business District (downtown), as well as enforce restricted parking hours on 50 Avenue (Franklin). The restricted parking hours are 3:00 AM - 9:00 AM and 4:30 PM - 6:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Please do not park on 50 Avenue during these times.

If you have a parking or traffic complaint, you can call us at (867) 920-5630 during business hours or by calling (867) 920-2737 after hours. If you have a question or concern about a parking ticket, please call us at (867) 920-5630
