Our new Corporate and Community Energy Action Plan (2015-2025) is complete!
2018 Sustainable Communities Award media release
On May 12, 2014 Council approved the plan to renew the Community Energy Plan for years 2015 to 2025. This "living" document is now ready and will help chart the course towards an energy smart Yellowknife that aims to reduce the city's GHG emissions with a Northern lens.
The City of Yellowknife has been actively looking for ways to reduce its heating costs, dependence on fossil fuels and impact on global climate change.
Building on the success of our first Community Energy Plan of 2006, this new Plan has even more ambitious targets and will help to hold the City accountable to its commitment to be a climate action leader.
City of Yellowknife Corporate Targets:
- 50% reduction of GHG emissions by 2025, using 2009 as the baseline year
- Increase the share of renewable energy use from 50% to 70% by 2025
- Keep annual energy costs below the average of the preceding five years
City of Yellowknife Community Targets:
- 30% reduction of GHG emissions by 2025, using 2009 as the baseline year
- Increase the share of renewable energy use from 18% to 30% by 2025
The Energy Plan includes the Green Energy Retrofit Program Study as well as a recent 2014 GHG and Energy Inventory.
