The City of Yellowknife carries out construction projects throughout the year to maintain and improve public infrastructure. The 2026 capital projects related to our roads and water systems can be found below. Although construction may cause short-term disruptions, it is essential for keeping the City's infrastructure safe, functional, and up to date.

We thank you for your patience as we complete municipal projects during this year’s short construction season.

  • Expect traffic delays: plan for longer commute times
  • Consider alternatives: if possible, walk, bike or take public transit
  • Slow down: adhere to the posted speed limits
  • Obey Signage: follow all signs and barriers, even if workers are not present, as hazards may still exist; obey directions from traffic control personnel
  • Use caution: watch for pedestrians, cyclists, moving heavy equipment, trucks entering, exiting or reversing, and look for uneven pavement
  • Be courteous: cooperate with other drivers and merge early where lane closures are announced

2026 Traffic Light Upgrades & Maintenance

Due to the nature of the work, lane closures, speed reductions, and temporary shutdowns of the traffic lights are required.  Measures are being taken to reduce the impact on residents, with some work scheduled off peak hours and evenings. Drivers are reminded to use caution in work areas, treat nonoperating traffic lights as all-way stops, and follow all posted traffic control signage and directions from traffic control personnel.
