The City of Yellowknife provides safe, reliable drinking water and wastewater services to the majority of residents through its piped infrastructure system. Drinking water is treated at a dedicated Water Treatment Plant and distributed throughout the community using a network of six pumphouses, reservoirs, and underground piping.
Public Works staff actively manage and maintain the water system year-round to ensure high water quality. This includes regular system flushing and cleaning, continuous monitoring, and routine testing to meet all regulatory standards. Water quality is monitored 24 hours a day, and regular sampling is conducted to confirm that it remains safe for drinking and everyday use.
The City also operates a comprehensive wastewater (sewer) system designed to collect, transport, and treat wastewater safely. This system includes fourteen lift stations, force mains, and a sewage lagoon with control structures to ensure proper treatment and environmental protection.
Both water and wastewater systems are regularly inspected, maintained, and monitored by trained staff to ensure reliable operation and compliance with all applicable regulations. The City is committed to protecting public health and the environment by delivering clean, safe drinking water and responsibly managing wastewater at all times.
In areas where buried piped infrastructure is not available, the City provides water delivery and sewage pump-out (trucked) services. These services are provided to residents and businesses in Old Town, Latham Island, N’dilo, Kam Lake Industrial Park, Grace Lake, Con and Rycon Trailer Park, as well as commercial buildings at the Airport and along Old Airport Road.
